Tensioning of Steel BoltsTensioning of Bolts in Concrete
Tests have been carried out by Roads and Traffic Authority, NSW to investigate different factors affecting the reliability of bolted connections. Factors investigated were tensioning technique, tightening sequence for fastener groups, use of lubricants and fastener surface finish.
Samples tested were bolted connections used for bridge deck expansion joints. Individual load cells were used to measure the tensions in the fasteners.
This paper discusses the variability in fastener tension due to the different factors tested and makes design and construction recommendations for bolted connections of this type.
